The 2024 Cosmic Calendar Artwork: Symbols of the Past and Future

It has become my tendency to decorate my home with the artwork I created for the Cosmic Calendar of the year ahead.

I treat them like one organism, more interested by the way they weave together, than each one as a separate entity.

As I gaze at the symbols I have pulled out of my own subconscious, I wonder about their many meanings, and what else they will tell me as 2024 unfolds.  These musings draw me to a quote by Virginia Rosenberg in the 2024 Cosmic Calendar:

“We are the thicket.  There is nothing on the other side because there are no other sides.  There is only this teeming stew of open space- veined, sensate, and simmering with involvement.”

These collages are made from canvas board, wrapped with recycled fabric, then partnered with hand drawn mandalas, and photographed for you.  I created each mandala from start to finish, usually in the span of a day or three, but some of the mandalas in 2024’s Cosmic Calendar are almost a decade old.

It is strange to see such varied timestamps of my creative heart all together.  January and February’s mandalas, created 7 years apart, have woven beyond their first iterations, telling a different story.  I get to wait and wonder, and see how I might relate to these symbols now as 2024 unfolds.

The mandalas chosen for the 2024 Cosmic Calendar are a creative response to a list of poetic visual themes Virginia provided me for every month.  The list is my favorite part of the whole process.  I love wondering over the imagery provoked, delving into the symbols I have created, seeing what of my own wonders I can pull from to meet them.

Creativity is a call and response.  And I love that this year’s Cosmic Calendar embodies that creative quality even more.  A journal as well as a calendar, it calls to you with its ponderings, inspiring your response.

On December 20th, Virginia will be hosting a forecast on the astrology for the year ahead.  She’s been nose deep in historical research, and I for one am curious to hear more about the historical relationships drawn to the times at hand as we reawaken hundreds-of-years-old planetary transits.
